Program Description
Recorded: May 14, 2025 – In this webinar, we will show you some devices kids with disabilities might use to stay safe and engaged while moving about their day. Some of the equipment is high-tech and costly, and requires a doctor’s prescription. Some lower tech devices make self-care more fun and less stressful.
We will start by learning about the assessments and paperwork needed to submit an insurance claim for “complex” devices. We will look at devices and strategies that help children get through their self-care routines, including bathing and toileting. We will also look at specialized car seats for kids of all sizes, so they can travel safely. Finally, we will explore the walkers and gait trainers some kids use to get around and have fun at home, school and the community.
We will:
- Learn what information is required to write a Letter of Justification for insurance.
- Look at a variety of pediatric assistive technology devices for personal care, safe transportation, and walking.
- Discuss some helpful tips to get the just-right fit for equipment that can grow with your child.
- Highlight some AT devices and strategies to create a calm sensory environment for bathtime and beyond.
Presenters
Kathy Fallon, ATP, CRTS – Kathy is a RESNA-certified Assistive Technology Professional and Complex Rehabilitation Technology Specialist with Kennebec Pharmacy and Home Care. She has 30 years of experience providing equipment to children and adults of all ages in Maine. Kathy helps her clients find the positioning and mobility equipment they need to be active, healthy and as independent as possible.
Melissa Bliss, MS OTR/L – Melissa is an occupational therapist and assistive technology specialist at Maine CITE, the state assistive technology program in Maine. She has worked in a wide variety of educational and clinical settings as an OT, including home health, nursing homes, early intervention, schools, acute care, rehab, and as a program coordinator for an AT lending library and reuse program in Portland. Melissa joined Maine CITE in July, 2022, where she focuses on ensuring that all Maine people have better access to and information about the technologies and adaptive equipment they need to lead full and productive lives.
